Beef handling practices at Abattoirs and Butcher shops in Uganda: implications for meat safety and health of consumers

Proper beef handling contributes to achieving sustainable development goals 3 (good health and well-being) 12 (sustainable consumption production patterns). This is because it ensures the safety of meat consumers’ health. However, sector still underdeveloped in most African countries. In addition, there limited research addressing challenges. Uganda particularly, recent past, was whistle-blowing over contaminated on market, indicating a loophole food safety. Despite this, studies focusing practices have remained scanty. Thus, this study aimed examine at abattoirs butcher shops Uganda's Central, Western, Eastern regions. A mixed-methods approach employed collect data through survey, in-depth interviews, on-site observations. Findings revealed that were poor facilities for measures lacking or inadequate. Only 3% respondents had cold room storage facilities, spoilage relatively high (85.3%). Appropriate knowledge among abattoir operators inadequate, contributing low compliance with guidelines. Inappropriate may put consumers risk. The recommends responsible authorities should ensure mechanisms sensitization initiatives are prioritized.
